STUDENT LEARNING

Atchison Middle School believes that the transmission of knowledge and academic performance are extremely important to the future of our students and community. We also believe that there is more to schooling than gathering information and taking tests. It is our hope that students leave AMS prepared for the demands of citizenship. This means creating experiences where students are able to develop responsibility and character in authentic situations. We strive to create real life learning experiences so that students are able to interact with knowledge in an authentic situation; benefiting them today and in the future. With your support we have embraced the philosophy that "failure is not an option" and seek to have all students perform at meets standards or above level in all subjects.

Students demonstrate academic success by passing every semester of course work and satisfactory performance on state and local assessments during each of their years at AMS. Intervention programs in place to assist students in this process include Alternative School, extended learning day opportunities, and targeted classes if this expectation is not fulfilled.

Programs and methods will always be in place to support student learning at every level. Examples of these programs include: Good Standing, No Zeros on Homework, Academic Lab, Start on Time, Academic Achievement Area Class, Skills For Success Class and Summer School. These programs assist students in demonstrating mastery of board approved learning objectives.

PHYSICAL EXAM/ IMMUNIZATIONS

A physical is recommended for all students entering (new) to Atchison Middle School.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Encourage your son or daughter to become involved in one of our after school activities. Research shows that students who participate in activities are more successful in their classes. Activities include Science Olympiad, Spelling Bee, Student Council and AMS Players. Athletic activities include cheerleading, football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling and track.

STUDENT CONDUCT

AMS must provide the best possible learning environment for each student. Therefore, it is necessary that we have rules to maintain an orderly, safe system and promote the learning and practice of self-discipline. Each student will receive a Student Handbook contained within their planner on the first day of classes, which specifically outlines appropriate and inappropriate behaviors and consequences. Each student is to bring the handbook home and share it with you. We ask that you sign the note that will be sent home with each student indicating that you have read the handbook, and have your child return the note to his/her first hour teacher. We will do our utmost to keep you informed of your child's progression on a regular basis. Our Character Education Program is an important component to assisting students in making good choices, and preventing bullying.

STUDENT RECOGNITIONS

Students are recognized on a regular basis for displaying positive ACADEMÍCS, ACTIONS, AND ATTITUDES. These recognitions include: Honor Roll, Reading Challenge Rewards, Positive Behavior Support Ticket Program, Rave About A Brave Trips, McDonald's Lunches, and i-Achieve. In addition, individual teachers and grade level teams provide incentives and recognitions.

STUDENT PLANNERS

AMS provides every student a planner designed to help organize your student. The planner serves as a hall pass for students as well as an organizational tool to help them keep track of assignments and academic responsibilities. Ask to see it on a regular basis. Replacement cost of a lost planner will be $4.00.

COMMUNICATION

Our goal is to be accessible to students, parents and guardians. Please Contact us at anytime about questions you may have about your child's education. You may visit us on the web at: Our District Home page. This will provide you with helpful links to PowerSchool, Contact information, email addresses, and text alerts through "USD 409 Alerts". ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL

It is critical for your student' s success that he/she attends school regularly. If the student is absent, the school must be notified each day of that absence in order to make the determination of whether it is excused or unexcused. Children at AMS are under Kansas Compulsory Attendance Law. Truancy cases will be reported to the Atchison County Court Services. Students missing 15 days of class in a year run the risk of loss of credit and failure of that class. More information concerning attendance requirements will be available at registration.

SUPPLIES

Students enrolled in Physical Education class need to have athletic/tennis shoes. For other school supplies please refer to the enclosed Supply List.
